GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. More info: http://www.gimp.org/
Here are some tips on The GIMP about:
-
Changing the language of The GIMP
-
Interface improvement: all in one window using plugin Deweirdifier
-
Give The GIMP a look and feel of PhotoShop: GIMPshop
-
Drawing circles, ellipses, squares, …
-
Drawing arrows
Changing the language of The GIMP
The GIMP automatically selects the language it will use according to the language you have selected in your Regional Settings. If it has been set to Dutch (Belgium) for example the language within The GIMP will be Dutch. I found this pretty annoying. Of course you could change your Regional Settings, but that’s not really handsome, and there is nothing you can change in The GIMPs Preferences.
If you have not done already, download (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=121075&package_id=132255) and install the GTK+ Runtime environment. Then from your Start Menu, select GTK/ Runtime Environment, Select Language.

Now you can set the language of your choice for the current user, and all users.
Interface improvement: all in one window using plugin Deweirdifier
The interface with multiple windows cluttering your screen is not really inviting new users. The plugin Deweirdifeir creates a Background Window, and instead of 2 programs between which you switch (or tab; main and layers) there will only be one left. Here is a direct download link for Deweirdifier 3.0 alpha: http://www.groenewoudnet.nl/software/BackgroundWindow-3.0alpha.zip
All you have to do is unzip and copy the EXE and DLL file to your c:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins folder.
Give The GIMP a look and feel of PhotoShop: GIMPshop
If you know PhotoShop, you will probably like GIMPshop. For more info see:

Drawing circles, ellipses, squares, …
There are no such tools available in The GIMP, but in fact it’s pretty simple to draw these forms.
-
use the Rectangle or Ellipse selection tool (for circles and squares, just use the shift key) to draw a selection
-
click Edit, Stroke Selection
-
click Stroke
That’s all
or:
-
use the Rectangle or Ellipse selection tool to draw a selection
-
click Edit, Stroke Selection
-
change the Line width of the Stroke line
-
eventually click on + Line style
-
change Dash preset to Line, Normal dots, or what ever you want, …
-
click Stroke
